Sulaimani Tea, also known as Sulaimani Chai, is a traditional spiced black tea from the Malabar coast of Kerala, and is also popular in Karnataka and the Lakshadweep islands. This distinctive tea is renowned for its clear amber color, milk-free preparation, and refreshing hint of lemon. Unlike regular chai, Sulaimani is light and aromatic, often enjoyed after meals as a digestive. With strong Arab influences, it reflects the centuries-old cultural exchange between Arab traders and India’s coastal regions.

it’s etymology

The name Sulaimani is believed to come from the Arabic word “Sulaiman”, meaning peaceful or comforting – perfectly capturing the tea’s calming and soothing qualities. In some regions, it is also called Malabar Spiced Tea or simply Kerala Tea.

    1 tbsp (tablespoon or as per taste)

    1/2 tbsp (tablespoon - juice)

  • Mint Leaves

    4 - 5 leaves for garnish (optional)

Step-By-Step Guide

Boil water in a saucepan.

Then add in the crushed / grated fresh ginger, and boil it for 2-3 minutes.

Add in the lightly crushed spices. Simmer for 2 minutes so the flavors infuse well.

Add the black tea leaves to the spiced water. Reduce heat to medium-low and let it brew for 3-4 minutes.

Add honey to taste and stir well until completely dissolved.

Let it simmer for another 1–2 minutes for the flavors to blend.

Remove from heat and strain the tea into your mug.

Add lemon juice, garnish with fresh mint leaves, and enjoy your invigorating cup of Sulaimani Chai!

Notes

Crushing Spices :
Lightly crush the cloves, cinnamon stick, and cardamom pods in a mortar and pestle or spice blender.
sweetener :
You can use jaggery or sugar.
Tea Steeping :
Don't over-boil the tea, as this can make it bitter.
Spice Quantity :
Avoid adding more spice than mentioned, or the flavor might become too strong.
If Using Tea Bags :
For 1/2 tbsp: 2 tea bags, for 1 tbsp: 3 tea bags, for 2 tbsp: 5 tea bags.
