Kashmiri Kahwa Chai is a traditional aromatic green tea that has warmed hearts in the beautiful valleys of Kashmir for centuries. This golden-hued beverage is a delicate blend of green tea leaves, fragrant spices, and nuts that creates an enchanting drink unlike any other chai. More than just tea, Kahwa represents Kashmiri hospitality and tradition. It’s ceremonially served in elegant samovars during celebrations, family gatherings, and to welcome guests. The preparation itself is an art form, lovingly passed down through generations in Kashmiri households.  It’s a popular drink throughout Kashmir, Afghanistan, Central Asia, Iran and the Middle East.

it’s etymology

The word “Kahwa” comes from the Arabic “qahwah,” meaning coffee, though this preparation is entirely unique. In Kashmiri culture, it’s sometimes called “Mogul Chai,” reflecting its royal heritage. The beautiful golden color has earned it poetic local names like “liquid gold” and “amber nectar,” capturing both its precious nature and the warmth it brings to those who sip it.

Ingredients

  • Green Tea Leaves

  • Almonds

    1 tbsp (tablespoon or as per taste)

Step-By-Step Guide

Pour the boiling water in a pan (or boil the water).

Step 2

Add the cinnamon stick, cardamom pods, cloves, rose petals and saffron strands (don’t add whole 7 to 8 strands, leave 2 to 3 strands for later).

Let it boil for 3 minutes.

Then add the green tea leaves.

Heat for 3 to 4 minutes on low to medium heat.

Add in the sugar and let it boil for another 2 minutes.

While this is cooking, chop the almonds and put it in your serving mug or cup and add the remaining strands.

Pour the boiled mixture through a strainer into your mug or cup and Enjoy the Kashmiri Kahwa Chai!!

Notes

Crushing Spices :
Lightly crush the cardamom pods and cloves using a mortar and pestle to release oils for better flavor intensity. If you don't have a mortar and pestle, alternatively you can crush your spices using a small blender.
sweetener :
You can use honey as an alternative to sugar.
If Using Tea Bags :
For 1/2 tbsp: 2 tea bags, for 1 tbsp: 3 tea bags, for 2 tbsp: 5 tea bags.
