Illustration of saunf chai

Saunf Chai, also known as Fennel Tea or Fennel-infused Chai, is a traditional aromatic tea popular across India, especially in North Indian households. This distinctive tea is celebrated for its sweet, licorice-like flavor, digestive properties, and soothing aroma. It is particularly enjoyed after meals to aid digestion, reduce bloating, and provide a calming effect.

it’s etymology

The name Saunf comes from the Hindi word for fennel seeds, botanically known as Foeniculum vulgare. In various Indian languages, fennel is called variyali in Gujarati, sombu in Tamil, and shatapushpa in Sanskrit, meaning “having a hundred flowers”. This reflects the aromatic and flavorful essence of this beneficial seed.
