Illustration of Tulsi Chai

Tulsi Chai, also known as Holy Basil Tea or Sacred Basil Tea, is a traditional herbal tea deeply rooted in Indian culture and Ayurvedic medicine. Unlike regular chai, Tulsi Chai highlights the unique taste of fresh or dried basil leaves (Ocimum tenuiflorum), which are considered sacred in Hindu tradition and revered for their therapeutic properties.

it’s etymology

The name Tulsi comes from Sanskrit, meaning “the incomparable one” or “matchless.” In Hindu tradition, tulsi is often called the “Queen of Herbs” or “Mother Medicine of Nature.” Botanically known as Ocimum tenuiflorum or Ocimum sanctum, tulsi is distinct from sweet basil and is celebrated in Ayurveda for its sattva (pure) qualities. Its sacred and healing nature has made it an integral part of Indian households for centuries.
